I've been sent so many "Sircam" viruses in the passed week that's it's not funny! Popular understanding (and most dictionaries) usually confuses Anarchy with Anarchism.
Anarchy is chaos, disorganization, a mindless mob, selfish looting, pointless vandalism,
confusion.

Anarchism (Greek: "Anarchos" without government) is a class of grassroots democracy
based on temporary localized committees; and totally denying any form of central
authority. Hence the common slogan "Smash the State". The premise is that centralized
long-term politics is too vulnerable to the corruption and self-serving motives that naked
power attracts. Anarchism utterly denies the threadbare concept of leadership by inherent
right or authority. Instead the anarchist leads by discarding power, and constantly strives
to demystify specialized knowledge and invests it in the people. An example is the
countless volunteer hours that some people put into their Internet offerings.

Anarchism is also confused with Communism. Communism proposes to replace the
former bourgeois government with a similar bureaucracy of elite workers. Their belief is
that Workers are inherently noble and incorruptible. Immediately after the Russian
Revolution thousands of anarchists were imprisoned or executed. Anarchism denies
ANY such form of top-down centralization; and makes decisions in open and transparent
public council. Thus Anarchist society insists on direct social adulthood from it's citizens,
rather than deferring to the elected parental-figures of representative democracy. The
direct opposite (and deadly enemy) of anarchism is termed Fascism...the worship of
bureaucracy and authority.

History lists a number of variants on the Anarchist theme, these being the most famous:
Commune of Paris (1871) the citizens of central Paris France barricaded their city against
their national government (March 17 to18) and for two months an almost carnival spirit
swept the city. Back rents were canceled, workers took over and ran workshops,
Municipal nurseries and soup kitchens were set up. During the "bloody week" of May 21
to 28 the French government slaughtered 20,000 Communards (Collective members).
Sadly the Commune fell May 28 to superior fascist forces; and is commemorated in the
world famous song "The Internationale."

During the Spanish Civil War the Anarchist trade union C.N.T. (Confederacion Nacional
del Trabajo) opposed the fascist dictator Francisco Franco. During the 1936 to 1939
fighting the men and women of CNT successfully collectivized farms, textile mills, public
utilities, transport systems and health systems while managing to send volunteers, arms
and supplies to the Front. My point is that Anarchist societies are viable, which is why
they were immediately crushed by terrified fascist politicians! Recent American flavors
are called Direct Democracy and Libertarianism.

Although most anarchists are initially peaceful, the movement has been unjustly linked in
the popular mind with violent direct action. Assassinations such as King Humbert 1 of
Italy, William McKinley U.S. Pres., King George 1 of Greece, Marie Francois Carnot
Pres. of France were all committed by avowed anarchists. However the bomb throwing at
the Chicago Haymarket Square Riot (1886) and the South Braintree Mass. Payroll murder
(Sacco-Vanzetti case) were not the work of anarchists. In 1902 the USA enacted a law
barring entry to any who profess anarchism.

often carries references. For example my favourite opium-eating poet Samuel Taylor

lover!/ And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething/ As if the earth in thick pants
