This made me think about the whole thing again, yeah I know that I don't normally need an excuse.
What makes things legitimate? I have been wondering this since the US declared the War on Terrorism. They chose a target to vent their fury on and then proceeded to carry out its threat to bring them to justice. But I find myself pondering this case. They have invaded another country overthrown it's government (So no change there for US foreign policy). The US government has labeled the Al-Qiada fighters as illegal combatants whatever that is. Well who decides who's legal and who's not? They have carted them off to a military base in someone else's country (Cuba) so they are not able to avail themselves of the rights inherent within the US legal system. And the worst crime is they won't give us our own terrorist to play with. Their treatment is barbarous and I know what their organisation did is a truly horrific thing but to legitimatise the capture and incarceration of these people we (the west) need to display all of the characteristics that we are claiming to fight for, these being freedom and democracy. You cannot lock people up for not agreeing with you. This is fascism. You cannot complain that the Japanese or the Viet Cong where inhuman in locking up prisoners of war in little cages robbing them of any human decency then do the same to your enemies. It is clear to the world that we need to do is take these individuals to a court charge them with crimes. If we cannot do this then we must release them and suffer the consequences. If not we are no worse than the Nazis.

So what should we do? Well, we could ship them back to Afghanistan and hold them under their law and let them prosecute but I suspect they have no real legal frame work in place. We could take them to the US and let their legal system deal with them but I think that they could not be guaranteed a fair trial in the states. Which leaves shipping them to the International Court in The Hague and let them deal with it? This of all the options still offers the greatest chance of responding to all critics throughout the world.

One of things that is annoying me the most about the WOT is the arbitrary way the US is using international law. Let me give you some examples. As part of the international agreement on limiting Chemical and biological weapons, inspections are carried out by an international team. These are the blokes that inspected the Iraqi weapons dumps. Well a team was supposed to inspect the US. This team was denied access because some of the inspectors where from Iran. The US has just torn up the antiballistic missiles treaty because they see some advantage in this.

This behaviour is that of a bully. Where is the moral high ground? It's not where some guy on the radio said that if "we put a bullet in the back of the head of each detainee we would still have the moral high ground". No think long and hard about this for the world is watching.

I am reminded of my Uncle Charles fighting in the Far East during WWII he was a prisoner of war and suffered horribly at the hands of the Japanese but he never failed to offer up some good things about that experience. I remember him telling me that shortly after he had seen his batman executed for stealing clean water he commented that at least he would not have to put up with the mans incessant bleating about no spuds on the menu today. On a more serious note he later went on to become good friends with his captors, after the war, and explained that their world view was wrong, they needed to see more of the world and experience it's diversity to understand that the Japanese where no more superior than the Germans or Russians. He was convinced that this was needed after the war and went out of his way to find the commandant and show him the beauty of this diversity through taking them traveling with him. It was an odd thing for a Guards officer to do but it worked. It was the tolerance that he displayed that showed he held the moral high ground.

When Charles first met them afterwards he punched the commandant on the nose then apologised for his behaviour. He went on to explain that his batman was very good and he had found him impossible to replace.

Know I often come in for stick when talking about my family and what they have done but I thought I might tell you about this week my Aunt Maureen who married many times for cash. She was first married, to get this

Of all of these only one was a nice guy. The rest where shits of the worst variety. She was half-caste White/Native American brought up in a world that could not be farther from those of her ancestors. She often would taunt my father with suggestions that he could do better for himself whilst dangling the carrot of her wealth. Now I generally hold this against her but I do think that what made her so bitter and twisted a description my father would have denied was her education.

When my great-grand parents discovered the truth about my Grandfather they soon cut him off from the family wealth. The trade off for keeping his wife and some degree of control of his life was the sending of Maureen, Reg and Charles to Swiss finishing schools. This is where they learnt to see the world as part of an elite. My father, Oscar and Dillion where later additions, in fact 40 years separates their births. As proto members of this society elite they learned to look down on ordinary people and to fear difference rather than celebrate it. Maureen of all of them bought into that dream, Charles to a lesser extent although he bought into the whole concept of the English Gentleman, whilst Reg was soon seen for the waster he was and adopted the role of black sheep aka Flashman.

Maureen's only child I have already told you about, I believe that the reason she married an Indian was so that if any baby came out dark it would be his fault. She feared her ethnic background above all denying it at every turn. She would cover herself in face powder and never tell anybody about it. By the time my father grew up the worlds view of ethnic minorities hand changed and he although cautious of revealing it was still proud of it. My Aunt did everything to further her own ends even to manipulating the childhoods of some of my other cousins to replicate her upbringing. They as a result have a confused worldview are uncertain of who or what they are, apparently white but red underneath.

What lesson can we learn from this? Well try not to force your world view on your children question the views and motives of those around you and do not except something as true just because you read it somewhere because after all what is the truth.

I have been asked many times by my friends (that’s people who I kind of know i.e. the guy in the paper shop) what I think of the current War on Terror. Well I think this particular war is over. I’ve been watching the news and their where no reports from Afghanistan which as far as I’m concerned means it’s over. Now the big question that’s left is did we win or lose? Well, I have a view on this. I’ve looked at all the results of the pin point accurate bombing and as my Uncle Charles would have it “ You know Verbal when I was in the Guards Regiment, that was during the last big show, old Rumpy Pumpy as we called or 2IC used to have a saying it went something like this. When the German artillery fired the Allies would duck. When the British fired the Germans would duck and when the Americans fired we all ducked kissed our arses good-bye and prayed to god that they had forgotten to put detonators in their shells” and I guess nothing changes. So I think we can give them 0/10 for the fact that they don’t seem to have been able to kill any real combatants. On the side of international terror they have been doing rather well. Bin-Laden and Omar are both at large this along with the Keystone cops like escape of Omar on the back of an aging motorbike has scored high on my Uzimeter. Add the obvious fact that the Americans have actually killed more of their own side than TIT (Team International Terrorism). So all in all I think it is reasonable to give them a creditable 6/10.

So what about the next meeting of these two giants of world affairs I rather hope they pick a nicer location somewhere perhaps with a better view of the area of engagement. I personally think Switzerland would make a nice arena. Just think of the advantages if they organised it for the summer just before the world cup finals. The advantages for the Allies are great. They would have loads of accommodation, all those empty ski chalets, instead of crashing helicopters they could use the redundant ski lifts thus significantly reducing their own casualties. There would be no problems of feeding the locals as they are already grossly over weight and could probably survive the conflict on their natural reserves of chocolate and the military would be able to use the handy local banks to put all of the rake off from the kit they sell into their numbered Swiss bank accounts. All in all it’s a bit of a win win situation as no one likes the Swiss, they are not a particularly large group with no overseas hoard of zealots ready to take up the sword of justice and they are crap at everything short of clock making.

However I bet Pretzel breath et all will avoid this obvious choice since Switzerland has no natural deposits of oil, minerals or drugs. And experience tells me that these are the likely deciding matters on US policy. So more realistically where will the next one be? My real guess is that we are being softened up for the round two in Somalia. The potential oil deposits are large. The four American oil companies that invested large amounts in exploration in this region and saw that money disappear after the preseason not so friendly in the region will be lobbying the White House for a return to this. Will the Cannucks get involved this time? I think not, since they are still smarting from the revelation that they boiled children over an open fire in the last conflict. Is it not strange, that in this world of a new and aware Hollywood that a film like Black Dork Down is made? I don’t think so.

So speaking of my family I know you are all keen to hear more about them so I thought I’d leave you with the story of my cousin Bill who died a while ago. Now Bill was the son of my Aunt Maureen. She was a horrible individual who made her money by marrying rich idiots and then divorcing them for a share of their cash. Well she had married a guy who was Carbon paper manufacturer in fact this guy had the contract for the supply of carbon paper to the Imperial bureaucracy in India.
For those of you who don’t know what carbon paper is, it’s a paper that if you place it under the page you are typing on (old typewriters) then it will make a copy.

So he was basically the Bill Gates of his time he had a monopoly and the empire ran on carbon paper. To this happy couple was Born William Paycock Mitre a happy go lucky lad with all of the advantages of wealth. He lived in a palace, went to the finest schools and mixed with the very best people. In fact he was in with the ruling elite big time. Well this would have been fine if it wasn’t for two things, the first was the fact that he had Uzi blood in him, this lead to a lot of fucking, drinking and gambling. Now in moderation this would have been OK but my Uncle Reg had seen an opportunity to a piece of world class freeloading. So he was soon introducing Bill to some of the more alternative sides of Indian life. The two of them cut a swath across Asia from Tehran to Jakarta. There wasn’t a club that did not know who they where and when they had visited. The bill for damages alone was more than the cost of a small ocean going luxury yacht (incidentally this was their preferred form of travel)

Well things got to a head when Reg persuaded Bill and the Crown Prince Jigme Singye Wangchuck of
Bhutan to race off some of the Princes Rolls Royce’s. It ended in disaster with Bill wrecking a 1933 Silver Arrow in an ill judged overtaking maneuver. The car was his Royal Highnesses favourite and the resulting argument caused a diplomatic rift that lead to China declaring war on India over their common border this as a result of a strange series of interconnecting treaties. Well the family was scandalized by Bills behavior. The whole thing was sorted by the creation of a trust fund and the severance of all connections with Bill. Reg rapidly caught a boat back to Blighty realizing that this particular gravy train had reached the end of the line and Bill well he just carried on drinking. The family gave him less and less money. Eventually it caught up with him sclerosis of the liver took hold and the only person left was a one legged prostitute in a Sydney trailer park who was the latest nurse come lover of Bills. She looked after him until he died at the age of 28. A sad tale I hear you say, well I don’t like to think so. Bill knew what he was doing he knew that if he continued then he would die young but he did not like the lie he had been living as a child. He disliked having servants and all of the trappings of wealth. Which is why he probably crashed the car.

So why mention it, well if you are in that position you make choices. The current rich and famous seem to live on selfishness and distrust, Bill didn’t, he lived honestly and truthfully, he never stole from people and was renowned for his largess (generosity). A lesson to all would be Anarchist - it’s not the being rich that is intrinsically wrong it’s how you treat people and that is the truth.
